Same-Day Wheel Balancing - Sittingbourne and Isle of Sheppey

A vibration through the steering wheel that appears at certain speeds is one of the most common signs your wheels need balancing. At FSC Motor Repairs, you can drive into our Sittingbourne garage without an appointment, and we’ll balance your wheels while you wait.

It’s a quick, inexpensive job that makes a noticeable difference to how smoothly your car drives.

What wheel balancing is

No wheel and tyre is perfectly even in weight all the way round as even a small heavy spot causes the wheel to wobble or hop as it spins, and the faster you go, the more noticeable it becomes. Balancing corrects this by adding small weights to the rim, so the weight is spread evenly and the wheel turns smoothly.

Signs your wheels need balancing

  • Vibration through the steering wheel, often appearing around 50 to 70mph and easing off above or below that speed. This usually points to the front wheels.
  • Vibration through the seat or floor, which more often comes from the rear wheels.
  • Uneven or patchy tyre wear, sometimes with a scalloped pattern around the tread.
  • A humming or droning noise that changes with road speed.

Why wheels go out of balance

Wheels that were balanced when the tyres were fitted don’t always stay that way:

  • A balance weight can fall off, especially after hitting a pothole or kerb
  • Tyres wear unevenly over time, changing the weight distribution
  • A puncture repair can add weight to one side of the tyre
  • Impacts can slightly bend or distort the wheel

When to have your wheels balanced

  • Whenever new tyres are fitted
  • After a puncture repair
  • When a vibration appears at speed
  • After a heavy pothole or kerb impact
  • If a wheel has been removed and refitted for another repair and a vibration follows

What happens during wheel balancing

Each wheel is removed and mounted on a balancing machine, which spins it and measures exactly where any imbalance lies and by how much. We then fit weights to the rim at the points the machine identifies. On alloy wheels, we use stick-on weights on the inside of the rim where possible, so they’re out of sight and don’t mark the finish. The wheel is spun again to confirm it’s balanced before being refitted to the car.

When balancing isn’t the answer

Not every vibration comes from wheel balance, and we’ll check the other likely causes rather than assuming. These include:

  • A buckled or damaged wheel
  • A tyre with a bulge or internal damage
  • Worn steering or suspension components
  • Warped brake discs, which usually cause vibration when braking rather than while cruising

If the problem lies elsewhere, we’ll explain what we’ve found and give you a price to fix it, and many of those repairs can be done the same day.

Balancing and alignment

Balancing and wheel alignment are often mentioned together, but they solve different problems. Balancing deals with vibration, while alignment deals with the car pulling to one side or wearing its tyres unevenly. We can check both on the same visit if you’re not sure which you need.

Why choose us

  • No booking needed, so you can come in as soon as you notice a vibration.
  • Done while you wait in most cases.
  • Other causes ruled out, so you’re not paying for balancing that won’t solve the problem.
  • Clear pricing before any work begins.

As a local, independent garage, we know your time matters, which is why we offer same day repairs to get you back on the road quickly. However, please be aware that same day service and repairs are subject to part availability.
