Head Gasket Repairs – Sittingbourne and Isle of Sheppey

FSC Motor Repairs diagnoses and repairs head gasket problems in Sittingbourne and Isle of Sheppey with no appointment needed. If you suspect a head gasket problem, it’s worth acting quickly. Caught early, it’s a contained repair, but left alone, it can lead to serious engine damage.

What a head gasket does

The head gasket seals the gap between the engine block and the cylinder head. It keeps the combustion pressure inside the cylinders and stops oil and coolant, which flow through passages in both parts, from leaking or mixing. When it fails, any of those can escape into places they shouldn’t be.

Signs of a blown head gasket

  • The engine overheating, or the temperature gauge rising higher than normal
  • White smoke from the exhaust, often with a sweet smell
  • Coolant disappearing with no visible leak
  • A milky, mayonnaise-like residue under the oil filler cap
  • Bubbles in the coolant expansion tank
  • Rough running, misfires, or loss of power

Some of these can have other causes; a little residue under the oil cap, for example, can come from condensation on cars used for short journeys. That’s why proper testing matters before anyone starts taking the engine apart.

What causes head gasket failure

Overheating is by far the most common cause. It’s often triggered by something smaller, such as a coolant leak, a failed thermostat, a faulty water pump, or a cooling fan that’s stopped working. Age and high mileage play a part too, and some engines are known to be more prone to it than others.

How we diagnose it

We use a combination of checks to confirm whether the head gasket has failed. These include testing the coolant for combustion gases, pressure testing the cooling system, and reading fault codes and live data with our diagnostic equipment. If the gasket isn’t the problem, we’ll find out what is, and many of those repairs can be done the same day.

What the repair involves

Replacing a head gasket means removing the cylinder head. Once it’s off, we check it for warping and cracks, as overheating can distort it, and a warped head must be resurfaced or replaced before it goes back on. A new gasket is then fitted, along with new head bolts where the manufacturer specifies them, and any related parts that need replacing.

We’ll also fix whatever caused the failure in the first place, whether that’s the thermostat, water pump, or a leak, so the new gasket isn’t put under the same strain. The engine is refilled with fresh oil and coolant and tested before you collect it.

A note on head gasket sealants

Bottles of sealant that promise to fix a head gasket are widely available. At best, they’re a short-term measure, and they can block parts of the cooling system. If you’ve used one, let us know when you bring the car in.
