We know a horsebox isn’t just another vehicle. When it’s off the road, competitions get missed, vet trips get complicated, and plans fall apart, so we aim to keep that time as short as possible.

Horseboxes we work on

We work on the mechanical side of horseboxes built on van and light truck chassis, such as the Ford Transit, Iveco Daily, Renault Master, Peugeot Boxer, and Fiat Ducato. That includes the popular 3.5 tonne horseboxes that can be driven on a standard car licence, along with heavier models up to 5 tonnes.

Why horseboxes need extra care

A horsebox works harder than most vans. It carries heavy, moving loads, often on rural lanes and grass parking at showgrounds, and the consequences of a breakdown are more serious with an animal on board.

Many horseboxes also spend long periods standing still, particularly over winter. That brings its own problems:

• Batteries go flat or lose capacity
• Brakes can stick or seize, especially at the rear
• Tyres age and crack, even with plenty of tread left
• Fuel can deteriorate, and diesel systems can suffer

Servicing your horsebox

Regular servicing is the best way to avoid a breakdown on the way to an event. We service horseboxes in line with the base vehicle manufacturer’s schedule, using parts and fluids to the correct specification.

We also recommend a check before the start of the season, especially if your box has been laid up over winter. We’ll look over the brakes, tyres, battery, lights, suspension, and fluids, and tell you clearly about anything that needs attention before you load up for the first show. If you’re heading up the A249 to the Kent County Showground at Detling or further afield, it’s worth knowing the box is ready.

MOTs for horseboxes coming soon!

We’ll soon be carrying out Class 4 and Class 7 MOTs at Sittingbourne, which covers horseboxes up to 3,500kg. If your horsebox fails, we can usually carry out the repairs and retest it the same day. Horseboxes over 3,500kg are tested at a heavy vehicle testing station, but we can still look after their servicing and mechanical repairs.
