Brakes
If your brakes are squealing, grinding, or just don’t feel right, you can drive into FSC Motor Repairs in Sittingbourne and Isle of Sheppey without an appointment. We’ll inspect the brakes, show you what’s worn, and in most cases replace pads, discs, or other parts the same day.
Brakes are the one system on your car you can’t afford to put off, so we don’t think you should have to wait a week for a slot to get them looked at.
Your car will usually tell you when something’s wrong with the brakes. The most common warnings are:
Grinding, a sinking pedal, or a red brake warning light all need checking straight away. Grinding in particular usually means metal is rubbing on metal, which damages the discs the longer you drive on it.
A proper brake inspection looks at the whole system, not just the pads. We’ll check the pads and discs for wear, the calipers for sticking or seizing, the brake hoses and pipes for damage or corrosion, and the condition of the brake fluid. On cars with rear drum brakes, we’ll check the shoes and drums too.
Once we’ve finished, we’ll explain what needs replacing now, what can wait, and how much it’ll cost before we start. Replacing pads and discs on one axle typically takes an hour or two, so most brake jobs are finished the same day.
Brake pads press against the discs to slow the car, wearing down gradually as they do. How long they last depends heavily on how and where you drive, with stop-start town traffic wearing them faster than motorway miles. We check them at every service and MOT, so you’ll know when they’re getting close to their limit.
Brake discs wear more slowly, but they do get thinner over time and can warp, causing that juddering feeling through the pedal. If the discs are below the manufacturer’s minimum thickness, they need replacing along with the pads.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which reduces its effectiveness, particularly under heavy braking. Most manufacturers recommend changing it every two years.
Many modern cars have an electronic parking brake, operated by a switch instead of a lever. Replacing the rear pads on these cars means using diagnostic equipment to wind the calipers back safely. Our dealer-level tools, including Ford FDRS and dedicated equipment for VAG, Mercedes-Benz, and Land Rover vehicles, mean we can handle these jobs properly.
As a local, independent garage, we know your time matters, which is why we offer same day repairs to get you back on the road quickly. However, please be aware that same day service and repairs are subject to part availability.
