Timing Belts
FSC Motor Repairs replaces timing belts in Sittingbourne and Isle of Sheppey with no appointment needed, and on most cars, the job is completed the same day. If your belt is due, or you’ve bought a car and don’t know when it was last done, drive in and we’ll take care of it.
A timing belt is one of the few parts on a car that can cause major damage if it’s left too long, so it’s not a job worth putting off.
The timing belt links the engine’s crankshaft and camshaft, keeping the pistons and valves moving in perfect time with each other. On many engines, the pistons and valves share the same space at different moments. If the belt snaps or slips, they can collide, bending valves and damaging pistons, and at that point, a relatively routine job becomes a major engine repair or even a rebuild.
This page covers conventional timing belts, which run outside the engine behind a cover. Some modern engines use a wet belt that runs in engine oil, and we have a separate page on wet belt replacement. Other engines use a timing chain, which is designed to last much longer, and we can tell you which your car has from its registration.
Timing belts are replaced on a schedule rather than when they fail, because they rarely give much warning. Every manufacturer sets an interval based on both mileage and age, whichever comes first. Rubber deteriorates over time, so a low-mileage car can still be due for a new belt purely on age.
You should consider replacing the belt if:
If you’re not sure of your car’s interval, give us your registration, and we’ll check it for you. To find out whether the belt has already been changed, look for an entry in your service history or online service record, an invoice, or a sticker under the bonnet. If there’s no proof, it’s safest to assume it hasn’t been done.
We normally replace the timing belt as part of a kit, which includes the tensioner and idler pulleys that guide the belt. On many engines, the water pump is driven by the timing belt too. Because the labour to reach it is largely the same, replacing the water pump at the same time is usually sensible, and we’ll tell you if your car falls into that category.
Once the job is done, we can record it on your car’s online service record, so it’s clear to you and any future buyer that the belt has been changed.
You can drive in without booking, you’ll get a clear price before work starts, and the job is usually done the same day. If the worst has already happened and the belt has failed, our Sheppey workshop carries out engine rebuilds, so the repair stays with a team you already know.
As a local, independent garage, we know your time matters, which is why we offer same day repairs to get you back on the road quickly. However, please be aware that same day service and repairs are subject to part availability.
