Signs your car battery is failing

Batteries rarely fail without warning. Look out for:

  • The engine turning over slowly, especially on a cold morning
  • A clicking sound when you turn the key or press the start button
  • Dashboard lights that dim or flicker when you start the car
  • The battery warning light coming on
  • The stop-start system no longer switching the engine off in traffic
  • A battery that’s more than four or five years old

That last sign catches a lot of people out, as many cars quietly disable stop-start when the battery is weak, so it’s often the first clue that something isn’t right.

Why car batteries go flat

Short journeys are one of the most common causes, because the alternator doesn’t have enough time to recharge the battery after starting. Cold weather reduces a battery’s capacity, and age takes its toll on all of them eventually, with most batteries lasting around four to five years.

Sometimes the battery isn’t the real problem because a faulty alternator or an electrical fault that drains power while the car is parked will flatten even a brand-new battery. That’s why we test the charging system as well as the battery itself, so you’re not replacing a battery only to be stuck again a week later.

If you’ve been getting by on jump starts, bear in mind that a failing battery will usually go flat again. Use the jump start to get the car to us, and we’ll test it and tell you whether it needs replacing.

Batteries for stop-start and modern cars

Cars with stop-start technology need a specific type of battery, usually an AGM or EFB unit built to cope with constant restarting. Fitting a standard battery to one of these cars can lead to early failure and problems with the stop-start system.

Many modern cars also need a new battery registering with the car’s computer, so the charging system knows it’s been replaced and charges it correctly. We use dealer diagnostic equipment, including Ford FDRS and dedicated tools for VW Audi Group, Mercedes-Benz, and Land Rover vehicles, to make sure this is done properly.

Fitting a new battery is usually done within an hour, with a little extra time for cars that need it registered. The price depends on the type of battery your car needs, as stop-start batteries cost more than standard ones, and we’ll confirm it before any work starts.

Why choose us for your new battery

  • No waiting around. Drive in when it suits you, and in most cases you’ll leave with a new battery fitted.
  • The right battery for your car. We match the type and specification your car needs, rather than fitting whatever’s on the shelf.
  • We check the cause. Testing the charging system means the problem is fixed properly the first time.

As a local, independent garage, we know your time matters, which is why we offer same day repairs to get you back on the road quickly. However, please be aware that same day service and repairs are subject to part availability.
