Fast-Fit Car Tyres - Sittingbourne and Isle of Sheppey

Do you need new tyres today? Drive into FSC Motor Repairs in Sittingbourne and Isle of Sheppey without an appointment, and we’ll check your tyres, talk you through the options for your car and budget, and in most cases have new ones fitted while you wait.

Whether you’ve picked up a puncture, spotted a bulge, or been told your tread is getting low, you don’t need to book a slot days in advance. Fitting and balancing usually takes under an hour, and we’ll explain the difference between budget, mid-range, and premium tyres so you can choose what suits you.

The legal tread limit

In the UK, car tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way around. Driving on tyres below the limit can lead to a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre.

The legal minimum isn’t the same as a safe minimum, though. Stopping distances on wet roads increase noticeably as tread wears down, which is why many experts suggest replacing tyres at around 3mm.

A quick way to check is the 20p test; put a 20p coin into the main tread grooves and if you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread may be close to the limit, and it’s worth getting it checked.

Signs you need new tyres

Tread depth isn’t the only thing to watch. Have your tyres checked if you notice:

  • Bulges or lumps in the sidewall, which can indicate internal damage
  • Cracks in the rubber, a common sign of age that can mean replacement even with plenty of tread left
  • Cuts, nails, or screws in the tread
  • Uneven wear, such as one edge wearing faster than the rest
  • Vibration through the steering wheel at speed
  • A tyre that keeps losing pressure

Uneven wear often points to a problem elsewhere, such as suspension or alignment, so we’ll let you know if we spot signs of this. When tyres do need replacing, it’s generally best to do them in pairs on the same axle so they grip and wear evenly.

Punctures

Not every puncture means a new tyre because if the damage is small and within the central part of the tread, a repair may be possible. Damage near the sidewall, larger holes, or a tyre that has been driven on while flat usually means replacement is the safer option. We’ll inspect the tyre and give you an honest answer.

Tyre pressure warning lights

Most modern cars have a tyre pressure monitoring system, which warns you when a tyre loses pressure. After new tyres are fitted, or if the light stays on despite correct pressures, the system may need resetting or a sensor may need attention. Our diagnostic equipment allows us to deal with this, so you won’t leave with a warning light still showing.

Why choose us for tyres

You can drive in when it suits you, we’ll explain your options clearly, and you’ll get a fixed price before anything is fitted. Tyres are also among the most common MOT failure items, so getting them sorted early can save you trouble at test time, and if you sign up for our Service and Warranty Plan, it adds protection at next year’s MOT as well.

As a local, independent garage, we know your time matters, which is why we offer same day repairs to get you back on the road quickly. However, please be aware that same day service and repairs are subject to part availability.
